The upper regions of the German state of Hesse witnessed heavy snowfall on Monday, causing major problems locally. Dozens of flights were canceled at the busy Frankfurt Airport due to snowfall.
Tree branches were snapped over the roads due to the sudden snowfall, which led to the closure of the road, leading to numerous traffic jams.
In Wiesbaden, public transportation was disrupted and many bus routes were canceled or shortened. A group of 27 students from Frankfurt International School had to spend the night from Monday to Tuesday with 28 adults in the building because it was too dangerous to return home.
The fire brigade reported Tuesday morning that it was still unclear whether the school would reopen Tuesday or whether the stranded students would return home first.
In and around the municipality of Kidrich, about 40 kilometers west of Frankfurt, fire brigades and police had to take action to rescue nearly thirty cars submerged in snow. Not far away, about a hundred people in their cars or buses in the Wallofbach (Wallofbeck) valley were completely snowed in, including schoolchildren on a school bus.
Snow will continue to fall in the area until at least Tuesday morning. Locally, snow thickness may reach 20 cm. The meteorological services warned that low-lying areas in the state of Hesse would also see snowfall.
