With rounds of 70, 66, 75 and 70 strokes, Dutch golfer Lars van Miguel finished four under par and tied for 33rd at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open.
Chile’s Joaquin Nyman (pictured) won the Australian Open men’s golf championship in a thrilling playoff after making an eagle on the second extra hole. Niemann defeated Japan’s Rekoya Hoshino when he made a triple eagle on the par-5 18th hole and his opponent a birdie after both made birdies on the first extra hole.
The duo finished the tournament tied for the lead at 14 under par, Niemann had a final round of 66 to set the course and waited nearly an hour and a half before learning his fate. Hoshino, playing in the final group, missed a long putt on the final regulation hole that could have given him the Stonehaven Cup.
Niemann then missed an eagle putt from 1.5 meters on the first hole in the playoff, but recovered to hit a putt from just over 2 meters on the second attempt to seal the title. He is the first South American to lift the Stonehaven Cup.
The top seeded Australian was Min Woo Lee, who finished with a round of 72 to finish third at 12 under par.
Lars van Meijel’s rating has dropped significantly in Australia, where Min Woo Lee is still at the top.
