Germany surprisingly beat the United States in the FIBA World Cup semifinals. The German men won 113-111 (first half: 59-60). For Germany, this is the first last place in history. Team USA, the current Olympic champion, has won the World Cup five times in the past.
Andreas Obst (24 points) and Franz Wagner (22 points) were the best shooters for the Germans. Anthony Edwards’ 23 points and eight rebounds weren’t enough for the United States.
With a last-place finish, Germany is certainly one better than the bronze medal in 2002, the only World Cup medal for our eastern neighbours. The United States will miss the World Cup final for the second time in a row. In 2019, in China, the quarter-finals were the final destination.
Earlier in the day, Serbia secured the first final ticket. The Serbs beat Canada 95-86 (first half: 52-39). Captain Bogdan Bogdanovic, a player for the Atlanta Hawks, was crowned the best scorer in the winning camp with 23 points. The World Cup final will be held on Sunday at 2:40 pm Belgium time.
All matches of the final stage of the World Cup will be held in the city of Pasay, located south of the Philippine capital, Manila. During the group stage, matches were also held in Jakarta, Indonesia and Okinawa, Japan.
