What exactly is general knowledge?
General knowledge is knowledge that can be acquired by people with average educational opportunities. It is not just about the knowledge that is taught to children and young people in education. This also includes knowledge that is absorbed involuntarily, for example when consuming media.
What is public education?
General education describes the most important knowledge and skills that a person needs in order to be able to effectively shape as many areas of modern society as possible. General knowledge should be the basis of everyone’s education. Both terms, general knowledge and general education, are unclear and not uniformly defined. The terms are often equated with colloquialism.
But what’s the difference?
Quite simply: general education requires general knowledge. If general knowledge is available, people still need their intelligence to understand this knowledge in context and apply it when in doubt. In psychology, general knowledge consists of everyday facts stored in long-term memory. In order to build this general knowledge, a person needs a certain level of intelligence.
How did the terminology develop?
The terms general education and general knowledge come from the Age of Enlightenment: this was a time of recognition that the full knowledge of civilization was not limited to isolated books. In addition, the quantity of knowledge does not depend on quality: special knowledge, for example, is only of limited help or value to each individual, but each person needs a concrete base of experiences, insights and values that make it possible to use special knowledge sensibly. During the Age of Enlightenment, the Encyclopedists attempted to collect all available knowledge and make it accessible to the general public – a revolutionary project, because education until then had been limited only to certain, mostly higher, sectors of the population.
What belongs to general knowledge?
If general knowledge is defined as educational law, it depends largely on the country in question, culture, individual educational level and social environment. General knowledge in this country includes knowledge in the fields of politics, economics, geography, history, language, literature, technology, natural sciences and art.
