At the beginning of 2024, 11.7 million people held a Dutch car driving licence. That was 9 percent more than ten years ago. However, there was no increase.
The growth in the number of driving license holders is in line with the growth of the Dutch population aged eighteen or over, statistics agency CBS reports based on new figures. Therefore, the number of driving license holders has not increased proportionately.
On January 1, eight out of ten adults held a driver's license. That was only ten years ago.
More than a quarter of driver's license holders are 65 or older. This is a significant increase compared to ten years ago: 45 percent. But this increase is also easy to explain, because there is an increasing number of people over the age of 65. People in this age group are more likely to obtain a driving license than they were ten years ago.
In particular, more women over 65 have a driver's license than in 2014. There is an increase of 53 percent. For men, this percentage was 38 percent. The number of women over 75 with a driver's license has doubled in the past ten years.
More driver's licenses in rural areas
Most people have a driver's license, especially in rural areas. In the “very urban municipalities” only 68 percent of residents had a driver’s license, compared to about 85 percent in non-urban municipalities.
In Roosendaal, 92 percent of the population over the age of seventeen had a Dutch driving licence. It is followed by Staphorst and Tubbergen with 91 percent. The percentage of driving license holders is lowest in Amsterdam: 61. This is not surprising, because in municipalities where many students live, fewer people usually have a driving license.
