Shortly before one of the most important days of the US primaries, a new national poll paints a bleak picture of incumbent President Joe Biden. In a poll of voters conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, he can count on the support of 43% of respondents, compared to 48% for Republican Donald Trump.

The poll also shows that Biden might do worse if he faces Republican Nikki Haley in the presidential election. (Unsplash)

Trump and Biden are expected to face off in the presidential election later this year. They are seen as the most likely to be in the primary elections currently being held by Democrats and Republicans to choose their official presidential candidates. Super Tuesday will be held next week and then voting will take place in many states.

The 81-year-old Biden appears to be handily winning the Democratic primary, but a new poll of 980 voters could still ring alarm bells for his team. Democrats are clearly very divided on his nomination. In addition, less than a quarter of voters believe their country is moving in the right direction.

    Haley over Biden

Biden defeated Trump (77) in the presidential elections four years ago. Among respondents who voted for Trump at the time, 97% would do so again now. For Biden, the percentage is only 83 percent. Ten percent of people who supported him in 2020 now say they prefer former President Trump.

Presidential elections are held in November. The poll also shows that Biden might do worse if he faces Republican Nikki Haley in the presidential election.

In a voter poll, you would get 45% of the votes in such a scenario, compared to 35% for the current president. However, the 52-year-old Haley's chance of beating Trump in the primary appears slim
