The Gotthard Panorama Express is one of the best panoramic trains in Switzerland, along with the Bernina Express, Glacier Express and the new Golden Pass Express. The train runs between Arth Goldau and Lugano every year between the end of April and the beginning of October. From Lucerne, travelers can take a boat to Fluellen and take a train there.
The Gotthard Panorama Express is only accessible by reservation and a first-class train ticket. An Interrail or Swiss Pass is also valid on the train, provided it is a first class card and the seat is reserved. The reservation fee will be 24 CHF per person from 2024 (in the past this fee was 16 CHF). The train consists of SBB first class panoramic cars. The train does not run on Monday. The first train in 2024 will depart on April 20.
Do you want to enjoy the beautiful view while saving on reservation costs? Then take the regular train. Usually only the TrennoGottardo train runs on this route (Basel/Zürich – Locarno), but due to the freight train derailment, in 2024 almost all trains to Lugano will run via the old Gotthard route. There is only one lane available in the Gotthard base tunnel. There are a number of trains running via the highway, especially during weekends. This is because there will be fewer freight trains operating.
