“The British government wants to determine for itself the relationship it will have with the European Union after Brexit. It will, of course, have to live with the consequences, that is, with a less connected economy.”
For years, Merkel has been open to a deal that would not hinder British trade. However, the door to settlement is now closed, according to the English newspaper.
Merkel said in an interview with The Guardian newspaper, “We have to abandon the idea that we decide what the British want. This is up to the United Kingdom and as Europe we will respond appropriately.”
57% of Britons are against Britain's exit from the European Union
On Friday evening, CNN published the results of a poll showing that a majority of Britons (57%) will now vote against Britain's exit from the European Union.
Only 34.9% would vote to leave the European Union, according to a survey by the European Social Survey, which is conducted every two years and measures trust among citizens in Europe. 8.3% will not vote at all.
Increasing support
In the 2016 referendum, 52% of Britons voted to leave. So support for the European Union is increasing.
No explanation was given for this increase. However, the British economy has been hit hard by Brexit, with a number of major companies leaving the UK and settling in the Netherlands, among other places.
