The United States has begun construction of a temporary port near the coast of the Gaza Strip, international news agencies reported. The US government would like to provide more emergency aid to the people of Gaza, but is currently unable to do so because Israel is cutting off essential emergency aid. An American military spokesman said that Israeli forces will be present during the construction of the port to protect American forces.
The Pentagon had previously stated that about a thousand American soldiers would participate in building the platform and pier that will form the port. Construction can take up to sixty days. Because the port will be built on the sea, American forces will not have to land in the Gaza Strip.
President Joe Biden announced the measure in early March, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government refused for the umpteenth time to allow more emergency aid into the Gaza Strip via truck. The international community, including Israel's Western allies, has strongly criticized Netanyahu's actions, although the prime minister has shown little interest in the matter so far.
Many Middle Eastern countries, as well as Western countries, have delivered emergency aid to the Gaza Strip by airdrop. This is dangerous for the population and not enough food will be provided to the population this way.
The entire population of Gaza, approximately 2.2 million people, suffer from food shortages. Even half of them are starving. For Gaza's children, who make up about 50 percent of the population, persistent food shortages can cause permanent developmental and brain damage.
