“It is very annoying for these travelers,” she said. “With all the travelers we receive every day of the year, this unfortunately happens sometimes.” The two passengers were treated and were able to “continue their journey via Schiphol.”
Waiting time is less than an hour
Today is a peak day for the airport. On days like these, the company expects more than 80,000 passengers to arrive. This is far more than the 64,500 passengers who departed on average each day during the May holidays last year. “It's not very crowded, but it's May holiday.”
The wait time this morning was still less than an hour, the spokesperson said. “Suitable for the holiday period when many people want to travel at the same time,” she adds.
Staff shortages at the airport, including security, led to long queues during holiday periods two years ago. As a result, some people missed their flights. There were also riots. Chief Financial Officer Robert Carso said in February that the airport had hired several security guards to avoid chaos in the summer of 2022.
Optimism in FNV and Marechausee
The FNV trade union announced earlier this week that it did not expect any problems in Schiphol during the May holidays. “You see from all sides that employers are doing a lot of work to get through that peak in the spring and summer,” said David van de Geer, director of FNV. The Royal Military Police also recently said they were well prepared for crowds at the airport during the May holidays.
