The Municipality of Emmen has allocated nearly €2 million to build the new community center in the Angelslaw area of Emmen. The intention is to demolish the current building before the construction holiday ends, to make way for new construction.
The new community center will be built on the site of the current centre, on Stattnoe in Emmen. There will be a brand new building for the Angelslo Community Center Foundation. In addition, there will also be a branch of Aldi supermarket in the building on the ground floor. The new building is expected to be ready by the end of next year.
According to the municipality, the new community center is not an unnecessary luxury. The current community center is very old and has high energy costs, councilor Rene van der Weyde previously stated. So Angelslo expressed interest in new construction years ago.
Chairman of the Angelslow Community Center Foundation Jan de Boer: “We are very happy that it is almost time, because we can no longer deal with the old building.” Not only because of the late maintenance and heating costs, but also because of the design. “We're dealing with a lot of empty space here.” In the new building to be built, the foundation area will decrease from 2,600 square meters to 1,700 square meters. “And that's good for us.”
Regarding construction costs, the municipality of Emmen is now contributing more than $1.9 million, mostly towards the completion of the project. It had previously been agreed that Aldi supermarket would bear the costs of preparation and construction of the shell. The foundation also obtained a loan of €850,000 for the project, De Boer reports.
The plan is to demolish the old community center before the construction holiday, so that new construction can begin after the summer break. “This would make it possible to put our new center into use at the end of next year.” Action is underway after objection from the neighborhood. “We expect we will find out,” the president believes.
At the end of February, it was announced that the Angelslo Community Center would be temporarily housed in the Kop van Zuid shopping complex near Scheper Hospital during the demolition and construction phase. The institution has already moved. “It's an excellent temporary solution,” the president said. “We are glad this place was available, even though we can't do everything there. Activities such as the gym and youth activities will be held elsewhere for the time being.”
The municipality of Emmen will bear the costs of renting the space in the business park, which amount to more than 381 thousand euros. The municipality gets this money from the so-called disaster fund.
Kop van Zuid is located in Boermarkeweg, between Scheper Hospital and the former site of the Aquarena swimming pool. The building is used, among other things, as office space, a care hotel and a health center by various parties.
