Belgian Prince Laurent wants to perform less for the Belgian royal family. He said this this week in an interview with the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. He wants to be able to “develop himself better” than he can now as King Philip's brother. He is preparing for a “new life” in Türkiye.
Belgian King Philippe's 60-year-old brother will distance himself further from his royal duties. In an interview with newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, the prince said he was preparing for a “new life” abroad. “In the time I have left before I die, I want to achieve something that my children will be proud of.”

“New life” in Türkiye
Prince Laurent signed an agreement with Istanbul University to establish green and renewable energy projects. “I have invented a system of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. This could save companies hundreds of millions of euros and reduce pollution by 80 to 100 percent. So I am a pioneer,” the Belgian prince said. Laurent will not immigrate to the country for these projects.

It didn't fall off completely
To establish these projects, Prince Laurent carries out fewer public tasks. Although he doesn't give up on her completely. The prince said in the interview: “I know very well that you would like to hear from me that I am completely fed up with everything. But I will not say that.” “It would also not be wise for you to choose another life because you are tired of your current life. The truth is, I am convinced that I will be able to develop better in that new life than in the life I have now.”

Difficulty in the role of the prince
This is not the first time that Prince Laurent has made such statements. The king's 60-year-old brother has said several times that he would prefer to give up his obligations as a prince and the associated salary. He has also been in the news for years for, among other things, making phone calls during a parade on the Belgian National Day in 2019. Laurent is therefore viewed by some as the “black sheep” of the Belgian royal family.
