A prominent figure in the Russian Armed Forces has been arrested on suspicion of corruption. Vadim Sagamarin, deputy general of the army, was arrested on charges of accepting bribes “on a large scale.” This was reported by Russian media on Thursday. Sjamarin's home was reportedly searched. It is unclear what amount is involved.
These are the fourth arrests in a series of arrests of high-ranking Russian soldiers and officials since April. Last month, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was arrested in Moscow on the same suspicion as Shamarin.
Ivanov is said to have accepted more than 1 million rubles (10,000 euros). The maximum penalty for this is fifteen years imprisonment. Rumors had previously circulated that Ivanov was “eating” from the state treasury, but after his arrest he became the first high-ranking Russian suspected of corruption since the invasion of Ukraine. After Ivanov's arrest, more arrests by the defense command followed. The team and the former commander of the armed forces, among others, were arrested.
These developments follow reforms in Russia's defense sphere: Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was recently replaced. Shoigu leaves for the Russian Security Council. The defense budget has also been increased for this year: more than 36 trillion rubles (377 billion euros) will be released in 2024.
