The US government secretly allowed Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons against targets on Russian soil. The permission applies only to areas around Kharkiv province, where Russia has carried out a major offensive in recent weeks. A US government official and two other sources told Politico on Thursday.
Weapons must be used strictly to “fight back”, not to initiate the attack themselves. The decision was taken “in recent days” at the request of the Ukrainian government. Washington's refusal to allow Kiev to strike targets elsewhere in Russia “has not changed.” The news has not been officially confirmed by the US government.
The American change, of course, is in line with statements made by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week. They said Ukraine should be able to use Western weapons against military targets in Russia if Ukraine is attacked from there. Macron said: “We believe that we should allow them to destroy the military sites from which missiles are launched, and the military sites from which Ukraine is being attacked, but we must not allow them to attack other targets in Russia.” “There are no civilian targets, but also no other military targets.”
