Netflix has revealed the first trailer for the upcoming historical biopic Shirley, about the first black congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm. None other than Regina King plays the lead role in director John Ridley's film, which is set to be released on the streaming service next month.
Netflix's upcoming film Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American federal representative who became a major party's first black nominee for President of the United States in 1972. Her groundbreaking campaign featured youth engagement as she tried to recruit enough delegates to speak at the Democratic National Convention in General. She received 152 delegates, but ultimately lost the nomination to Senator George McGovern.

While she tries to gain support by teaming up with the Black Panthers at one point, she also faces opposition from people who think she can't do it. But that doesn't stop her.
When she was cast in the role of Chisholm, King, who is also involved as a producer on the film, said in a statement that she hoped to “inspire many generations to come” with the Netflix project.
