In recent months we have seen a lot of rain in Europe and a lot of snow at the end of winter. Even on the last day of May, things were still going well in the Alps! In Australia, the real snowfall is still waiting to happen. The ski season starts there next weekend, but snow conditions aren't ready yet.
Opening during the King's Birthday holiday
Traditionally, ski resorts in Australia open their doors over the long weekend in celebration of the King of England's birthday. In Australia this is celebrated on the second Monday of June, so the opening of ski areas is accompanied by many events. These organized events and activities are still held in many ski areas, but it is not possible to do much skiing yet.
Slow start to winter
Although some snow fell and some artificial snow was created, this is not enough to open a large part of the ski areas. Temperatures will not be low enough in the coming days to produce much snow, so only a very limited portion of the ski slopes will be open. It's a slow start to winter in Australia.
Slightly open
Perisher announced Tuesday that it would be open for the weekend, but really only for some beginner skiers, snowboarders and some freestyle skiers who don't mind walking. Mount Buller also has some short slopes, but Thredbo does not open any ski passes. The same applies to Hotham, where the lifts will not yet be operational. However, you can go there for fun. Unfortunately, not ideal conditions for skiing.
Green slopes
A webcam tour of Australian ski resorts shows just how green the slopes are. If the weekend is a few weeks away, areas may not be open yet.
