Roger Ver is out on bail. One of the first Bitcoin users was arrested in Spain earlier this year. Vera, also known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” could still be extradited to the United States.
The United States accuses him of tax fraud. He was reportedly released from prison on May 17 after paying about $163,000. He should stay in Spain for the time being. He also surrendered his passport and must come every two days.
Fair has not been an official citizen of the United States for some time. But that does not prevent the authorities from taking serious measures against him. As far as we know, he has not been heard from on social media since his arrest.
Extreme vs. US
On April 30, the US Department of Justice announced charges against Fair for mail fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns. Authorities allege he defrauded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of approximately $48 million by underreporting capital gains from the sale of BTC and other assets.
Born in California, Fair renounced his US citizenship in 2014 and no longer holds a US passport. He now holds citizenship of Saint Kitts, Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda. US officials said they wanted Ver to be extradited from Spain to face him in the United States.
Bitcoin Cash
Ver played a crucial role in the early adoption of Bitcoin and was an early investor in Bitcoin-related startups such as Blockchain.info and BitPay. His nickname “Bitcoin Jesus” stems from his evangelical promotion of Bitcoin in the early years of the cryptocurrency.
Ver's move to Bitcoin Cash came in the wake of his dissatisfaction with Bitcoin's scalability issues and the direction Bitcoin was taking. By the way, he lost a lot of money because of it.
According to the US Department of Justice, if convicted, Fair could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for some of the charges. The penalty for tax evasion is five years, and up to three years for each false tax return.
