Eric Ciotti, the ousted leader of France's centre-right Republican Party, will go to court to retain his position within the party. He informed the French media about this on Thursday. Cioti had been expelled by the party council the previous day. He had announced his intention to cooperate with the far-right National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen. This led to a storm of protests inside and outside the Republican Party.
On Thursday, Ciotti told the French parliamentary press in Paris that he remains in his position. “I am the head of this party.” Then he sent from his office via social media: “I work for France.” Cioti describes the party members who expelled him as “ordinary people who understand nothing about what is happening in the country.” On Wednesday, Sioti tightly closed the door to the party office. He locked himself inside. The party's board that wanted to meet about stopping it had to move to a nearby museum.
Republicans have moved increasingly to the right in recent years. However, cooperation with Le Pen's party would break the cordon within French politics.
