New animated film Inside Out 2 is on track to make nearly $100 million in its second weekend in US theaters. According to various American media, this is a rare occurrence.
On its second Friday, the film grossed $30 million in the United States. If that continues through the rest of the weekend, that means about $98 million worth of movie tickets would have been sold after Sunday night, Collider wrote.
If the Pixar film grosses more than $93 million after this weekend, it will surpass Barbie and Super Mario Bros., which grossed that amount in their second weekend last year. Inside Out could certainly break the record for the second most-visited weekend for an animated film. There are six films that grossed more than $100 million in their second weekend. These include Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($149.2 million), Avengers Endgame ($147.4 million), and Jurassic World ($106.6 million).
Inside Out 2 opened last weekend in the US with $176 million. On Monday, another 22.2 million were added, which is also a unique achievement. In total, the film, set in the mind of a teenage girl, grossed $545.1 million worldwide. The film can only be seen in the Netherlands from mid-July.
