The United States has no intention of withdrawing its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. The US ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, was clear on this in an interview.
Washington is sticking to its position on the Sahara issue despite Algeria’s hopes for change. “President Biden has not changed his predecessor Donald Trump’s statement on the Sahara because it is a historical fact,” Moore Aubin told the Algerian news site La Patrie News. Since 2008, the United States has supported Morocco’s autonomy plan, which it still considers the best solution.

Moore Aubin stressed that the Biden administration “still views the Moroccan autonomy plan as serious, credible and realistic, with an approach that can meet the aspirations of the people of the Sahara.” She added: “We have not changed our position on this for nearly two decades. But ultimately, this solution must be under the auspices of the United Nations.”

The US ambassador also acknowledged the complexity of resuming the political process at the United Nations, despite the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy. De Mistura is struggling to revive the roundtable discussions, an initiative launched by his predecessor Horst Köhler in 2018.
