Two people were killed and thirteen injured in an apartment building in the Italian city of Naples when part of the building collapsed. The apartment is part of the Le Vele di Scampia complex, a complex located in a poor neighborhood made famous by the 2008 Gomorra series.
Locals heard a “huge bang” last night. Part of a gallery on the third floor of a residential building collapsed. A 29-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman died. Thirteen others, including seven children, were injured. Foreign media reported that two of them were in serious condition.
The fire brigade worked through the night to evacuate the remaining 800 residents of the apartment building. The building, Villa Celeste, was the last of the four notorious apartment buildings to be demolished.
The southern Italian city has other plans for the site where the apartment still stands. A new, more modern area is to be created. Le Vele di Scampia dates back to the 1960s.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. “Of course we are now thinking of the victims, but we will not stop the plans for this neighbourhood.”
The apartment where things went wrong is known from Gomorrah. This 2008 TV series is based on a book by Roberto Saviano and is about the Italian mafia.
