Previously sealed court documents provide insight into Jared Birchall, Elon Musk's right-hand man.
Birchall, a former banker, handles Musk's finances, personal affairs and private security.
In an affidavit in connection with Twitter's lawsuit against Musk, Birchall describes his relationship with the Tesla CEO.
A series of previously unreleased documents related to Elon Musk's legal battle with Twitter offer a glimpse into Musk's working relationship with Jared Birchall, a former banker who runs the billionaire's family office.
Birchall was questioned under oath in September 2022 as part of Twitter’s trial against Musk. The 350-page court document was initially sealed but was released to the public in July 2024 after PlainSite owner Aaron Greenspan filed a motion in Delaware Chancery Court to release the documents.
Jared Birchall: Head of Musk Family Office
The case was settled in October 2022 after Musk agreed to match his $44 billion offer to buy the company. Birchall, who serves as Musk’s chief of staff and is listed as Neuralink’s CEO, said in the affidavit that he met Musk while he was still working as a private wealth advisor.
“The first time I met Elon Musk, though he probably doesn’t remember it, was when I was an employee at Morgan Stanley years ago.”

The banker said he was later tapped to run Musk's family office around 2016 after one of Musk's friends, an unnamed Merrill Lynch employee, recommended Birchall for the role.
Axis Company LLC
Birchall said he has since expanded Musk’s family office, known as Excession LLC, to include several accountants and property managers. Birchall said his role covers everything from Musk’s financial dealings and bills to “personal matters” and private security, describing his role as filling “any gaps that need to be filled.”
Throughout the interview, Birchall described instances in which he reviewed documents to prepare them for Musk's eyes, vetted potential employees, served as a liaison to eager investors, and acted as Musk's representative in meetings with executives.
Birchall said he reports exclusively to Musk and meets weekly with the billionaire to discuss his finances and various projects. Birchall said the two also communicate frequently via Signal messages, which are set to automatically delete after a week to improve Musk’s security.
He works for SpaceX, among other companies.
“During the first four years I worked for him, I worked at SpaceX half the week and was constantly confronted by many different adversaries seeking access to his information,” Birchall said in his statement.
The banker said he was involved in Musk’s initial purchase of Twitter stock, and even once talked Musk out of joining Twitter’s board. Musk often asks him for help when he decides to build a new company, Birchall said, and the banker recalled flying on Musk’s private jet from Austin, Texas, to San Francisco, California, to sit next to Musk for a meeting with Twitter executives.
“He's constantly thinking about companies that haven't been founded yet that he wants to start, and he's been on the verge of starting several that don't exist yet.”

Representatives for Birchall and Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Business Insider’s Hayley Cuccinello previously reported that Birchall has been described as a staunch Musk loyalist, even helping the billionaire hire a private investigator after the Tesla CEO’s infamous “pedo” tweet got him into trouble.
