The live-action Borderlands film was considered a major disappointment by international media and Borderlands fans. The film achieved unprecedented low ratings, making Borderlands the lowest-grossing film based on the game franchise in recent years.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Borderlands has a score of 9% out of 100, which is an unprecedentedly low score, especially when you consider that no fewer than 99 different reviews were submitted by the media. However, a small number of critics gave the film a “fresh” score, while the majority gave it a “rotten” score.
It doesn’t look good on Metacritic either. There, the live-action Borderlands movie has a score of 27 out of 100. Out of 31 critics, only one outlet gave the movie a passing grade on Metacritic. Some outlets have called it the worst movie of 2024 so far. Borderlands fans aren’t happy with the final result, either. There are complaints that the jokes aren’t funny, the story doesn’t have anything to do with the games, and the cast isn’t close to the characters from the games.
Borderlands reportedly cost $120 million to make. The question is whether the film can make a profit. In the US, Borderlands had a solid opening weekend, grossing $8.8 million. For comparison, Deadpool & Wolverine made five times more money last weekend in the US and that film has already had several successful weekends.
