Kamala Harris, who has yet to be officially nominated as the Democratic presidential nominee, has become a social media sensation. She is very popular and seems to appeal mainly to young people. Her growing popularity has not been taken into account by the Trump campaign, says US expert Diederik Brink. “In the last debates between him and Biden, he came out on top every time. It wasn’t because Trump did well, but because Biden did so badly. And the Trump team thought they could capitalize on that in the polls — until Biden announced he was resigning,” says Brink. “The Democrats have turned the tables on the Republicans with Harris,” Brink continues. “Trump is suddenly the old man and you can hear it if you listen carefully to his speeches. You wonder: Does he still have it all together? There? He’s literally fallen into the Democrats’ trap.”
Uncertain time
Harris’s looting is not over yet, however. “She has been relatively invisible as vice president in recent years, and she has only had a few months to catch up,” said American journalist Carol Rock. “She has had to stand by Biden all these years, and now she really has to work on finding her own agenda. So far she has taken few risks.”
For example, she does not hold press conferences and has not yet given interviews to journalists. She only attends tightly organized campaign rallies where thousands of fans cheer her on.
Democratic Convention
But that could change as of next Monday. The Democratic convention is held that day. At the party’s meeting in Chicago, Harris will be formally nominated as the presidential candidate and will also deliver a closing remarks. That speech will be more colorful, which means criticism from her opponent can be expected.
So the first showdown with Trump is fast approaching. The two will face each other in early September. “Things could suddenly be different for both Harris and Trump,” Rock concludes.
