In the preview version of Windows 11, it is now possible to create FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB – but only from the command line
The Format button in Windows has been the same for 30 years – as has the arbitrarily chosen 32GB limit that should not be exceeded when formatting a file medium to FAT32. According to former Windows programmer Dave Plummer, both were actually intended as temporary measures. In the new Canary release (Microsoft’s name for preview builds), the limit has now been lifted – at least for command-line tools.
