In September, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Leuven will organize its fifth edition of the “Mobile Phone Behind the Wheel” campaign. Additional checks will be carried out from Sunday, September 1 to Monday, September 30.
“It is well known that the use of a portable electronic device behind the wheel significantly increases the risk of accidents,” the prosecutor’s office said. “The police will carry out additional checks on the use of portable electronic devices behind the wheel by car and bike drivers.”
Anyone caught should not expect just an official report. “In addition, all motorists will have their driving licenses revoked immediately for fifteen days. After that, the drivers will be summoned to the police court.”
“We impose an amicable settlement (fine) on cyclists. In case of dangerous driving behaviour, we will decide to summon the cyclist to the police court.”
Thematic hearings in the police court
On September 4, the first of eight thematic hearings will be held at the Police Court after the previous working month, in March. The 600 drivers arrested at that time will be allowed to explain themselves.
