The German national team made world news on Friday with its victory over the United States in the semi-finals. Although the team participated in the tournament without stars such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, it was a great undertaking.
By defeating the favorites and record holders (five World Cup titles), Germany reached the final for the first time ever. It was a close game against Serbia in the first two quarters. Halfway was tied in the Philippine capital, Manila: 47-47.
In the third quarter, Germany continued to distance itself, led by its star Dennis Schroeder. The Toronto Raptors player scored 28 points and became the most valuable basketball player in the Finals.
Until last Sunday, Germany’s best finish was third in 2002. Four years ago the country could get no further than a disappointing 18th place. Defending champions Spain were already eliminated last weekend.
America is also overwhelmed in the consolation final
After the heavy loss to Germany, only the consolation final remained for the team of American national coach Steve Kerr. Canada has surprisingly outperformed the Americans. After four quarters the score was tied, and then Canada struck in overtime: 127-118.
It was the first World Cup medal ever for Canada, which was led in the battle for bronze by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31 points, 12 assists) and Dillon Brooks (39 points). The two play as a club in the top American league, the NBA.
The United States, a basketball superpower, is missing out on a chance at a World Cup medal for the second time in a row. In 2019, the USA, as world champions, finished a disappointing seventh, their worst performance since 2002 (sixth).
