An American man has admitted trying to smuggle two Mexican immigrants into the United States by transporting them in a coffin covered with an American flag. US officials announced this on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old suspect was driving a truck “modified to carry coffins” on October 26 when it arrived at a border checkpoint in south Texas. The officers saw the coffin and asked the man what it was carrying, to which he replied that it was carrying “a dead man and a deceased Marine.”
The court said: “The coffin was in poor condition and had an American flag affixed to it.” Upon further investigation, officers discovered two Mexican men, both illegally in the United States, who were hiding in the coffin.
They both admitted crossing the Rio Grande into the United States and then paid a smuggler to take them to San Antonio, Texas.
The smuggler faces up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
