United States and Mexico
The United States and Mexico are also almost on the World Cup list. The United States easily beat Panama 5-1. Christian Pulisic made a hat-trick, and he was accurate twice from the penalty spot. Paul Areola and Jesus Ferreira also scored for the Americans.
Mexico won 1-0 against Honduras thanks to a goal by Ajax player Edson Alvarez. With one match remaining, the United States and Mexico have a three-point lead over fourth-seeded Costa Rica. Only if Costa Rica continues to beat the US in droves can Costa Rica steal the direct ticket from the US or Mexico. Mexico has one point enough in the last game against El Salvador.
Costa Rica was stronger than El Salvador, 1-2. As a result, Costa Rica now has 22 points. Costa Rica took the lead in San Salvador after half an hour of play thanks to Anthony Contreras. A minute later, he equalized the ball again with a goal from Christian Gale. Joel Campbell made 1-2 the job in injury time of the first half.
