Ahead of the release of AMD’s new Ryzen 7000 processors, water-cooling manufacturer Alphacool confirmed that AM4 products can also be used in AM5. A conversion set is not necessary for this.
With the release of Ryzen 7000 processors approaching, AMD is facing many changes. With Raphael CPUs there is not only a new CPU architecture and production but also a completely new platform with AM5. This will not only support PCI Express 5.0 and DDR5, but will also make some changes to the socket itself. With the AM5, AMD will switch from a PGA socket to an LGA socket for the first time in the private customer segment. Moreover, the heat spreader will also be revised: it will have several indents on the side of the Ryzen 7000 CPUs.
Alphacool promises cooler support
The aforementioned changes to the socket and heat spreader could also lead to massive changes for CPU coolers, but it looks like AMD wants to keep the previous specs largely. In line with this, Alphacool, which is known for its (built-in) water-cooling systems, has announced that all of the company’s CPU coolers suitable for AM4 can also be used in AM5 processors.
“In time for sales to start in September 2022, we can announce that all CPU coolers and turnkey solutions in the Alphacool family of products are compatible with AMD’s AM5 socket. Required mounting materials are included with all coolers and AIO hardware and enable cooling of the new Ryzen 7000 series processors. with water using Alphacool products from the start.”
The company says that the mounting material for the AM5 socket is already included with all of Alphacool’s current (integrated) water-cooling systems. In practice, this probably means that all water coolers are installed in exactly the same way as with the AM4 socket. If you already own a matching product, you don’t have to worry about upgrading the CPU.

While mechanical compatibility with Alphacool coolers is maintained, it remains to be seen to what extent the cooling characteristics will change as a result of the new heat spreader and more modern chips. If the Ryzen 7000 processors impose special requirements on the coolers used, the corresponding analyzes that address the issue should appear quickly after the September release.
