Major soccer star Carli Lloyd will be ending her career later this year. The 39-year-old American striker has been one of the best and most famous players in the world for years.
Lloyd celebrated major successes with the United States. For example, the 312-time international (128 goals) became the world champion with her country for the second time two years ago by defeating Orange Women in the final.
At the end of last month, Lloyd was again strong against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games in Tokyo with the United States. The striker was eventually forced to take the bronze, having claimed the gold with her country in 2018 and 2012.
In addition to many other awards with the American team, Lloyd was named the best player in the world in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, she was also one of the contenders, but she had to leave the award to Lieke Martens.
Lloyd only played on American soil as a club, until she played for Manchester City for a few months in 2017. In recent years, she has played for NJ/NY Gotham FC, which is still finishing the current season. It also plays four friendly matches with the United States.
“I got on the field in every game as if it was my last. I didn’t have anything because I know staying at the top is the hardest thing,” Lloyd said. “I want to thank everyone for the opportunities and the memories.”
