Android users who take screenshots in certain apps should now expect notifications to be sent.
Google introduced a new API with Android 14 that notifies apps when a screenshot is taken. This is DETECT_SCREEN_CAPTURE, Android Police reports.
Now the feature has also been discovered in the wild. For transparency reasons, the user who took the screenshot also receives a notification that the recording has been noticed. In this case it’s about the German shopping app Otto.

In the image, you can see that the message that the app has recognized the screenshot is displayed immediately after taking it. The screenshot overlay is still visible.
Until now, app developers only had the option to block screenshots completely using the FLAG_SECURE option. But the new API also has its limitations. According to Google, it can only recognize screenshots that are triggered using the corresponding key combination. Other recordings are not recognized, for example via the Android Debug Bridge (ADB).
