Apple shows interest in Formula 1
Good news if you have Apple TV Plus, as the company is reportedly planning to buy the live streaming rights to Formula 1. This isn’t the first sport Apple has wanted to buy streaming rights to. It previously became clear that the company is also interested in streaming deals for the NBA (basketball), NFL (football) and baseball. Hence, the offering on Apple TV Plus will likely be more comprehensive.

It’s no surprise that Apple is now planning to add Formula 1 to Apple TV Plus. Tim Cook actually waved the flag at the Grand Prix in Austin (Texas) last year, announcing the company’s interest in racing. New rumors now confirm this and also predict that Apple wants to buy the global broadcast rights to Formula 1. Unfortunately, this is not easy.
The Apple takeover will take years
Apple is reportedly planning to buy the international broadcast rights to Formula 1. This would allow Apple to broadcast races around the world, but it will likely be years before that happens. Many companies currently still have deals to stream Formula 1. Apple can buy streaming rights now, but these deals often remain in place for years.
In the US, ESPN holds the streaming rights until 2025. In the Netherlands, these rights are also owned by ViaPlay until 2025. Therefore, it will take some time before Apple owns the streaming rights, but there is a good chance that Apple will take this Step at the end. The company reportedly plans to pay $2 billion annually for the rights. A very high amount that is difficult to surpass by other companies like ViaPlay.
Formula 1 on Apple TV Plus is good news
If Apple gets the rights to broadcast Formula 1, it would likely be good news. You’ll of course also get Formula 1 if you have an Apple TV Plus subscription, so you no longer need to subscribe to ViaPlay. This is useful, because Apple TV Plus is much cheaper than ViaPlay. Plus, Apple TV Plus offers higher picture quality and more content.

So hopefully Formula 1 will indeed come to Apple TV Plus. Until then, you don’t have to do without Formula 1 content, because Apple is already working on a movie (with Brad Pitt) about Formula 1. A documentary about Lewis Hamilton will also be released, so you can get going again. Want to watch Formula 1 now? So get three months of ViaPlay here for just €9.99 per month!
