Apple already offers various apps for its own services, and not just for the iPhone or iPad. According to a recent report, the company is now planning another important application for Android smartphones.
Apple is looking for new users for its own services. For some time, Android smartphone owners have been able to use Apple Music without any conversions. It seems that the iPhone manufacturer now wants to forget about competing with another app. As Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says, citing a job offer from the company, they are looking for a developer for a “TV & Sports” app for Android. The position is part of the Apple TV team.
Apple TV will soon also be available for Android smartphones
It's not unusual for Apple to offer one of its own apps for competing platforms. For example, there's no messaging app for Android or Windows that you can use iMessage with. The company fears that it may lose users to Samsung, Google and their partners as a result.
However, things are different if you can make money yourself using the available applications. This has been the case, for example, with the in-house streaming service's music app for several years. Another app that falls into the same category is Apple TV and its associated service, Apple TV+. The corresponding app is already available on many smart TVs — including those with Android TV under the hood. I've also been able to use the Windows app for some time now.
However, there is currently no native app for Android phones – the only alternative is the web app. Apple TV+ was launched in 2019 and has won many fans since then. “CODA” even won an Oscar in the 2022 Best Picture category.
As Bloomberg's Mark Gurman writes, the new job offer suggests Apple has bigger plans. So it could be more than just an app improvement for Android smart TVs. So, in search of continued growth, there may be a new smartphone app for Android in the iPhone maker's future. Applicants will be responsible for “designing and building a cutting-edge application,” according to the description. However, it is currently unknown how long it will take until such an application is available.
