“Sonic Boy” and “Flying Dream” on the Saturn from Sega Mega Drive are my favorite games of all time. Yuji Naka is one of my favorite game designers, “Art Director” Naoto Oshima, the person who designed Sonic Boy, Dr. Egged, and Layali is without a doubt a God to me. When Square Enix announced in 2018 that Naka Yuji and Oshima had created a new studio under the name SE, and they heard that they were developing a new platform game, it made me very happy.
After nearly 3 years, I’m sitting here feeling everything, but I’m not happy! On the contrary, it was sad and there was enough void inside. This is because I just finished the 9 hour game marathon, which I finally played after waiting patiently for 3 years, but I found the game to be horrible. The recently released “Baran Wonderland” is awful. After all, given all the possible potential and all the talents that the main creators possess, writing this article hurts a lot. Welcome to the bastion of disappointment.
Once upon a time, in the second half of the 1990s, the leading mascot colored platform game was the hottest game genre. “Thylacine Attack”, “Jak & Daxter”, “Baby Dragon Spyro”, “Donkey Kong”, “Abang Aka Adventure”, “Gex”, “Sonic Boy”, “Super Mario” … .. the entire game world is simmering , And the person standing at this central point is Naka Yuji. Nowadays, the genre is no longer very popular, but given that “Baby Dragon Spyro” and “Thylacine Attack” were especially popular after their re-release, when Square invested in the ambitious projects of Naka Yuji and Oshima Naoto, it is easy to understand the process. Square thinking.
In Barran’s Bizarre Wonderland, we will follow Leo Craig and Emma Cole, two kids in trouble, all of whom are in need of help. One of them was bullied, the other was persecuted due to the difficult family environment. During the animation presentation, we were able to see how, in all their sadness, they found the “Wonderland” of the mystery of the ancient magical theater. In this dream world, Balan is, like Nights, a wonderful dream demon. Its mission is to mend people’s broken hearts by improving people’s minds and getting rid of their dark and uncomfortable memories. But this is done by wandering around some useless levels like goof, and trying to dress in different clothes in an attempt to acquire different abilities. This is the basic premise of this game. It’s a wild mix between the design of “Sonic Boy’s Adventure”, the premise of “Flying Dreams” and the clothing focus in “Super Mario Odyssey”.
The worst part ever about Baran Wonderland is how stupid it is and how incomplete it feels. It’s as if someone finds a rough sketchbook in the trash, pulls it out, and then tries to use all the loose ideas as the basis for the game. The feeling of control was bad from the start. Leo and Emma are slow, and they can jump, but their ability to jump over things is almost useless, and the animation is similar at best to a bad PlayStation 2 game.
In theory, these 80 sets of costumes are not a stupid idea, but unlike Super Mario Odyssey, inculcating and fulfilling these costumes is totally absurd. I often run a private group and come to the conclusion that the group’s special features don’t make any difference or they can’t be used at that level at all. After you often activate a group of clothes and a certain special function, you only realize that you cannot use that group of clothes to complete the link here, which means that you have to start over or go back to a more previous advance. There are also several costumes with the same special abilities that Leo and Emma have from the start – the ability to jump (even if it’s like a “limited jump”), which makes me think Naka Yuji and Oshima just want to use this game. Expensive and ugly joke, I must doubt it is a scam.
Plus, “Wonderland of Planet”YaoshouAwesome ugly. Really, really ugly. To be completely honest, the Unreal Engine 4.5-based PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X “improvement” sounds silly. These designs are a bad mix between Sonic Boy, Nights, Billy Hatcher, Giant Egg, and Cirque du Soleil, and the presentation and plot are poorly understood in many ways – you can easily put out a complete and costly “Baran’s Whimsical Wonderland” that is described as a complete and too expensive to fail. In each chapter, you have to deal with someone’s “dark” feelings and their painful tragedies, but all of these feelings and their effect on the people the heroes want to help won’t be until the end of the level. To reveal it to the player, it feels so stupid that it explodes. For the most part, I can’t understand where I am? Who i am? what is the point? Also, along with the poor settings, the bad mechanics, the mockery of the biggest stupid outfits, and the unfortunate graphic effects, this makes Baran Wonderland the worst game of the year so far. None of them.
