Bella – Drawing on expertise in training, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and footwear, Central College is hosting a bootcamp for girls and boys in high schools nationwide from June 26-29.
The camp is led by an experienced coach from the cross country men’s and women’s center team Joe Dunham, resulting in Central winning a pair of men’s conference titles and four NCAA Division III Championships. He also previously served as the men’s and women’s athletics coach at Central, where he led the Dutch to 12 domestic and foreign league titles.
The camp focuses on athletes entering grades nine through twelve, as well as coaches, and the camp includes several coaches. Three former Central American runners, Austin O’Brien, Cole Decker and Eli Horton, will present sessions on sports psychology and the significant impact of mental preparation on performance. O’Brien is a Waukee sports psychologist who participated in the 2020 United States Olympic Marathon Trials.
Eileen Davis, a former track and field athlete at the University of Missouri and registered dietitian, will share nutrition tips and nutrition methods for runners. Steve Poppenhaus of Fitness Sports will provide expertise in running shoes. And Matt SagarOne of Central’s three full-time strength and conditioning coaches will cover the essentials for endurance athletes in the weight room.
Participants also have access to the Central Course on campuses across the country, which has hosted many regional and high school events and conferences.
