China and the United States continue to work on holding a meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The two are scheduled to meet in San Francisco next month. This hope remains alive hours after meetings between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the US Prime Minister in Washington, both countries reported.
Wang came to Washington for the first time since 2018 and spoke there in recent days with fellow American Anthony Blinken and US security adviser Jake Sullivan, among others. Wang has also already spoken with Biden. Overall, more than nine hours of meetings were held behind closed doors.
The Americans expressed concerns, such as tensions over the South China Sea and the situation in Taiwan. However, the Chinese minister also told Biden after the talks that his country “attaches importance” to Washington’s hopes for improving and stabilizing relations with Beijing.
Earlier, Wang said in Washington that the United States and China may have differences, but they also have common interests.
