With Covid-19 supporting electoral sympathy around a veteran of the crisis, Angela Merkel has lost much of the momentum they have built over the past 12 months.
Yet, ironically, the Environment Party’s chances of entering government in 2021 have never seemed greater.
The German Green Party, which had been consistently represented in parliament since 1983 and formed a government with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) between 1998 and 2005, has renewed its image and electoral hopes over the past two years:
