South Korea South Korea has added 119 cases of coronavirus, its lowest daily jump in more than three weeks amid a downward trend in new cases, the Associated Press reported.

The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday that the additional figures bring the total number of deaths in the country to 21,296 with 336 deaths.

It is the fifth day in a row that the country’s daily jump has remained below 200 cases. The 119 additional cases are the lowest since mid-August.

Cases have soared in South Korea since early last month, with many linked to churches, restaurants, schools and an anti-government street gathering in the Seoul metropolitan area. In late August, South Korea’s daily jump exceeded 400 times.

But the number of cases has gradually slowed, thanks in large part to strict social distancing rules that restrict dining at restaurants and prohibit gatherings in churches, night spots, academics after school, and fitness centers.

Reuters and the Associated Press reported that India has now overtaken Brazil as the second worst-affected country worldwide, with both outlets saying that the number of cases in India is now over 4.2 million, after more than 90,000 cases were confirmed in one day.

The Guardian counts on Johns Hopkins University numbers, and these, while reflecting the figure of 90,000 in the daily counts, still show India has 4,113,811 cases, less than 4,137,521 in Brazil.

Either way, India is very likely to overtake Brazil this week.

Brazil’s daily case numbers are currently around 50,000.

The National Health Authority of China said on Monday that mainland China reported 12 new cases of Covid-19 on September 6, up from 10 the previous day.

The National Health Committee said in a statement that all new cases were imported, including travelers from abroad, on the twenty-second day in a row, because there were no local injuries.

The commission also reported 17 new, asymptomatic, infections, unchanged from the previous day. China does not count asymptomatic patients as confirmed cases.

The total confirmed cases of Covid-19 in mainland China now stands at 85,134. The death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has criticized Victoria’s roadmap to exit lockdown due to coronavirus, arguing that the same criteria would place Sydney under curfew, according to the AAP agency.

The state government’s “safe and steady” roadmap for recovery will see Melbourne continue under strict curfews and lockdowns through the end of September. Most of the restrictions on trade will remain until at least late October, while the others will remain in effect until the end of November.

Morrison wants the restrictions to be lifted faster, but conceded that Victoria would have the last word.

“The plan that was outlined yesterday is, I hope, the worst-case scenario,” he told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

The Prime Minister pledged to investigate the plan and asked the state authorities to show a detailed model for him in support of the strategy.

“With the thresholds set in that plan, Sydney will now be under curfew,” Morrison said.

Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews rejected that claim, saying there had been no widespread community transmission in Sydney’s home state of New South Wales.

Three schools in Teesside have confirmed cases of the Coronavirus as infections in parts of northeast England continue to grow rapidly.

On Sunday, Redcar and Cleveland District Council said a positive case had been recorded at St. Benedict Primary School RC in Redcar.

The local authority said the school will remain open and that parents have received advice.

Data from the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases showed, on Monday, that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany rose by 814 to 250,799.

The toll showed that with no new deaths reported, the death toll remained at 9,325.

India confirmed 90,632 cases of coronavirus infection within 24 hours, which is a global increase in the number of infections recorded in one day.

India has 4,113,811 cases in total, and it has recorded 70,626 deaths.

The astonishing total number of coronavirus cases worldwide reaches more than 27 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University Track, which relies on official government figures.

The true number of cases worldwide is likely to be much higher, due to varying testing rates and definitions, delays, and suspected underreporting.

India now has the fastest rate of Covid-19 infection in the world, and there are only 100,000 cases behind Brazil, the second most affected country in the world.

Australia said on Monday it would receive its first batch of a possible vaccine for Covid-19 in January 2021, as the epicenter of the virus in the country said the number of new daily infections fell to its lowest level in 10 weeks.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his government has entered into a manufacturing deal with CSL Ltd to produce a Covid-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, with 3.8 million doses delivered in January and February 2021.

AstraZeneca vaccine, known as AZD1222, is undergoing clinical trials in late stages in Britain, Brazil and South Africa.

Australia said in August it would buy the AstraZeneca vaccine, but the deal surfaced in some doubt in August after CSL said it was prioritizing its competitor’s vaccine.

The hurdle was overcome when Australia said on Monday it had also agreed to purchase a variant of the Covid-19 vaccine from CSL if the trials were successful.

The agreement came as the Australian state of Victoria said 41 cases of Covid-19 had been detected in the past 24 hours, down from 63 cases reported one day before and the lowest in one day since June 26.

Australia’s second most populous state was the epicenter of the second wave, now accounting for about 75% of the country’s 26,320 cases and 90% of the 762 deaths.

The southeastern state on Sunday extended a severe lockdown in its capital, Melbourne, until September 28, as daily infection rates fell more slowly than expected.
