Nick de Vries may be able to make his Formula 1 debut next weekend during the Bahrain Grand Prix. The opportunity is limited, but in the absence of Daniel Ricciardo, the Dutchman may be allowed to join the McLaren team.
On Friday, news came out that Ricciardo, who had been ill for several days during winter tests in Bahrain, nonetheless tested positive for the coronavirus. The Australian is said to be on the mend again, but he still has to remain in isolation until at least Thursday due to regulations implemented by Bahrain’s health authorities.
De Vries or Vandoorne
If all goes normally, the cheery driver can start the first race of the season which takes place next weekend. Team boss Andreas Seidl said if Ricciardo was still in isolation, McLaren should switch to Plan B. Cars, Sports and Sports† Says: “We have an agreement with Mercedes. Then Nick de Vries or Stoffel Vandoorne will be in our car.” In the unlikely event that Ricciardo remains in isolation for a longer time, de Vries may be presented with a great opportunity.
