The KNWU has announced the women's selections for the World Cycling Championships in Zurich, Switzerland. Demi Vollering is the absolute leader of the women's team, which also includes Bock Peters, Marianne Vos and Paulina Ruijkers.
Vollering will also be in the time trial, but she does not yet know who will be alongside her. The choice between Ellen van Dijk or Rejan Markus will be postponed until after the European Championships in Limburg, Belgium, in two weeks. For Vollering, the title fight in Zurich is half a home game, as she has been living in the Alps for some time.
“Demi is our leader and will compete in the time trial and the road race,” explains national coach Louis Gunwejczyk in the press release. “The road race course is very challenging, with a loop around the Greifensee followed by the Pfannenstiel climb, and then we finish on the circuit in Zurich.”
“With a total elevation of 2,400 metres, the race promises to be tough, with Demi competing for the gold medal with the team. I’m looking forward to seeing this group of riders in action,” said Johnwejczyk.
“There is a strong group ready for the World Cup, both in the elite women’s and junior teams,” adds Wilbert Broekhuizen, technical director at KNWU. “In addition to Demi as the leader of this team who has many qualities, Bock will be competing in a World Cup for the first time. It is great to see so many Dutch talents able to reach the highest level. We are aiming for nothing less than honours in Zurich,” he says confidently.
