NEW YORK – Canadian Denis Shapovalov won from the US Open.
Shapovalov, 21, topped the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta on Tuesday in the quarter-finals, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-3.
It took four hours and nine minutes to complete the five-set action at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 29-year-old Carino Busta will face Germany’s 23-year-old and number 5 Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.
12th seed Shapovalov fired 26 aces, but also suffered 11 double-fouls and 76 non-coercive fouls, compared to just 42 for his opponent.
Shapovalov, who started serving, and Carino Busta exchanged break points to open the match.
Shapovalov rolled from there and broke Carino Busta again with a backhand to lift his serve 5-3. The sixth ace helped him take the first set.
Carreno Busta had many great chances to dominate the second set of 77 minutes only for Shapovalov to respond every time, keeping him close, and eventually forced to break the tie.
Spaniard Shapovalov broke twice but was unable to hold his service in either place and returned points while failing to maintain any momentum. Instead of advancing, the score was 3-3 after Shapovalov’s fourth breaking point was broken.
Shapovalov can be heard voicing his frustration at times through the second set, with numerous non-coercive errors including six double faults. He got 6-6 before losing the set with a header.
Carino Busta converted the first breakout point in the third set, leading 3–2 when Shapovalov took the ball away.
Shapovalov got a break when his initial comeback came out later and Carino Busta didn’t challenge him. And he unleashed a clamor of excitement when Carino Busta broke in the same match to make it 4-4.
The third set also went to the tiebreaker, and was won by Carino Busta with a winning forward kick on the goal line.
It took exactly three hours to play the first three sets.
Shapovalov continued to shine as the game entered its fourth hour, taking a big advantage in Group D on his way to force the fifth team.
Carino Busta broke open and then bombed four consecutive aces to keep the serve. He converted his seventh breaking point in the next match and was a 4-0 lead after releasing his 22nd ace in the match.
Carino Busta seemed to be saving his energy for fifth place, as Shapovalov broke him again on his way to winning the set in just 28 minutes.
The serve was exchanged until Shapovalov suffered a double fault for the eleventh time to give Carino Busta the first half and lead 4-2 in the deciding set.
Shapovalov gave a sigh of relief when he saw that his heroism ended after a long fight.
Carino Busta was the beneficiary of top-ranked Novak Djokovic’s elimination from the fourth round match for accidentally injuring a referee in the throat after a match.
Djokovic’s elimination at Flushing Meadows and the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer represent a great opportunity for the remaining men in the tournament – all in their 20s, all in pursuit of the Grand Slam title.
Zverev reached the quarter-finals for the first time, defeating 12 double faults and some defeats, to defeat Borna تشuric in four sets earlier on Tuesday.
Shapovalove, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was the first Canadian to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s singles at the US Open.
Shapovalov was also eliminated by Carino Busta in the fourth round of the 2017 US Open.
The quarter-final win is valued at $ 425,000.
