Novak Djokovic withdraws from the prestigious US Masters Championships in Indian Wells and Miami. Through his own Twitter channel, the Serb announced that he had already taken into account that he would not enter the United States because he had not been vaccinated. It happened to him earlier this year in Melbourne at the Australian Open.
As if nothing had happened, Djokovic’s name simply appeared in the Indian Wells draw, also known as the fifth Grand Slam tournament, on Tuesday. He seemed to anticipate disaster.
“I knew I was not likely to be able to travel. The CDC (US alternative to RIVM, editor) said the current rules wouldn’t change, so I wouldn’t play in the US,” said the CDC.
Current CDC health regulations require foreign nationals entering the United States by air to present a complete certificate of vaccination and negative test results.
Journey through Mexico
Crossing the US border by land is a different story, because there are no restrictions on unvaccinated foreigners. It has been speculated for some time that Djokovic wanted to enter southern California – where Indian Wells is located – via Mexico. Not an option for Djokovic, as it turns out.
