Eric Cantona says he definitely won’t be watching the World Cup in Qatar. “I don’t care. It’s not even a real World Cup for me. Many human lives have been destroyed and yet we will all watch and rejoice together.”
The legendary former French football player (55) said in an interview with independent I cannot understand the choice of Qatar to be the host country for the World Cup. Cantona believes the World Cup should go to countries where football, for both men and women, has career opportunities. The United States, for example: Qatar is not a football country. In the United States, soccer is the most popular sport among women. There are great opportunities out there for the sport to grow.”
It is very disappointing to see that the FIFA World Cup can be ruled by money like this
He continues: “There are no such possibilities in Qatar. Then you see it’s all about money, I guess. Thousands of people died for this World Cup, and yet we all rejoice together.”
So Cantona itself will not rejoice. “Everyone gets a chance in football. Most footballers grow up poor. It is especially disappointing to see that the World Cup in football can be governed by money in this way.”
