“Can I charge my phone?” It’s a question asked by many guests in many homes. Many people will have USB-C and Lightning at home, but there are also many households that only have USB-C or Lightning only.
The problem that every phone doesn’t use the same charging cable is broader and deeper than just not being able to charge everyone in the house. If all phones were compatible with every charging cable, we would need fewer charging cables and produce less e-waste.
Apple co-created the USB-C standard, and with the 12-inch MacBook, it was the first manufacturer to launch a laptop with only a USB-C port. The iPad followed in 2018. And after that…it was quiet. All phones and many other devices, such as headphones, received USB-C en masse, leaving the iPhone with an old and slow Lightning port.
Until now, because there are now the first iPhones with a USB-C port. According to many rumors, this is the precursor to an iPhone without a charging port, but that is not the case yet. Until then, thanks to pressure and legislation from the European Union, we live in a world where every smartphone has the same charging port.
