This weekend, Formula 3 will complete the sixth round of seven sessions scheduled for Zandvoort. On the season’s original calendar, the season was scheduled to end on October 22-24 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. With that said, F3 will visit the US for the first time, but that won’t happen.
The teams were informed over the weekend at the Grand Prix in the Netherlands that the final weekend of the season would be completed at the Sochi Autodrom. Formula 3 will also drive there as a support for Formula 1. The organization made this choice due to changes in logistics. This had a significant impact on the cost of transporting goods to the United States. This made racing in the US impossible for F3, so the season finale will now take place in Russia between September 24 and 26.
“This calendar change has been approved by all concerned due to the inevitable logistical changes, which will have a significant impact on the overall cost of the planned F3 event in Austin,” a championship statement read. “The Formula 3 promoter confirms that both Formula 2 and Formula 3 will run three races during the event in Sochi.”
Formula 3 will be the support program for the Formula 1 race in Austin along with the W Series. So F3 won’t come, but the W Series has indicated it still has the intention of racing at the Circuit of the Americas.
