Fergus Browning takes part in the men's under-23 road race at the Australian National Championships on Saturday. The 20-year-old racer from Trinity Racing beat Matthew Greenwood in a fast race, against expectations. Browning was hit by a car the day before the tournament.
The course in Australia was 139.2 kilometers long and was held over twelve laps of the Bunyong Circuit. For a long time during the race it looked like Matthew Greenwood (Bridge Lane Team) was going to win. The Team BridgeLane rider left with three laps remaining and was able to keep it going until the final lap.
The championship lasted just one lap too long for him, because on this last lap Browning passed Greenwood. Browning was the only one in the chasing group to make the jump, causing two men to battle it out for the win. Browning was the leader in the speed race. In the chasing group of seven, Matthew Fox (CC Etupes) was able to win the race and thus complete the podium.
Famous names on the honor list
Greenwood follows in the footsteps of some well-known names in the current professional peloton. It was won by Michael Hepburn (2010), Rohan Dennis (2012), Caleb Ewan (2014), Myles Scotson (2015) and Chris Hamilton (2016). They all eventually made the switch to the WorldTour. However, Browning has yet to achieve a major victory while serving his Continental team Trinity Racing.
