Anyone running the Netflix app on their Fire TV Stick is seeing more and more QR codes right now. We'll tell you what it's all about.
Anyone who opens the Netflix app on their Amazon Fire TV Stick will not only see ads for new movies and TV shows when they select their profile, they will also occasionally see a QR code. This will take you directly to the streaming service’s mobile app. But why is Netflix advertising this on your TV screen?
With the huge QR code, the streaming service wants to draw attention to a new feature in the app: Companion Mode. You can pair your cell phone with your TV using a new button in the top right corner of the Netflix app. To do this, both must be on the same WiFi network and both must be signed in with the same account.
Netflix mobile app now offers TV companion mode
Once paired, you can then control the Netflix app on your TV via your cell phone. This can be handy because if you’re looking for a title, you don’t have to go through the hassle of navigating letter by letter using the remote on the on-screen keyboard, but can type it directly into your cell phone. Additionally, the companion mode provides “shortcuts” to popular sections like “New on Netflix.”
Companion mode is now available in the Netflix app. If you want to use it, you’ll need to update the app before scanning the QR code on your TV. Other streaming services have offered a similar feature for a long time. Amazon also offers a mobile app for the Fire TV Stick that lets you use the on-screen keyboard across all apps on the stick.
