The remains of at least five hundred horses have been found on a farm in rural Australia. These bodies were discovered after local residents complained of an unbearable stench. Several authorities, including the police, have begun investigating this matter.
Large numbers of dead horses were found scattered on a plot of land in the town of Wagga Wagga, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne.
“Some of the bodies were only skeletal remains, while other horses were killed relatively recently,” the municipality stated.
Strange for this area
Wagga Wagga councilor Michael Henderson has been devastated by the discovery. “It took us all by surprise. These are not things you would expect to see in this area, especially the number of horse carcasses that were found,” he said.
Find out last month
Councilor Peter Thompson visited the site with other authorities last month, but the matter has only been announced now. “There were at least two hundred dead horses in some of the piles,” he says. “It was a confronting experience.”
Cover up
According to the municipal director, those involved were aware of his arrival, due to attempts to cover the remains with dirt. Horses may have been illegally slaughtered on the property, but Thompson would not confirm that.
More research
In addition to the police, food and health authorities and the race regulator are among the agencies investigating the horse deaths.
