Footballer Bart Friends continues his career with Adelaide United in Australia. It became clear on Saturday that the 33-year-old defender will leave Sparta Rotterdam after eight seasons. Friends has signed a contract in Adelaide until the end of the 2025/2026 season of the Australian competition.
“During my career I always dreamed of playing abroad: a new league, a new style of play, a culture, something completely different,” Friends told Adelaide.com. He added: “After eight wonderful years at Sparta Rotterdam, this was the perfect time to realize this dream, but I was looking for something special and I found it on the other side of the world.”
Former PSV player Ernest Faber is the technical director at Adelaide. Vriends also knows the club through old acquaintance Craig Goodwin, a former Sparta and Adelaide player. “We spent a lot of time together at Sparta, on and off the pitch,” Vriends told AUFC Media. “He convinced me to play in the Australian league one day, because it suited me as a player and person. I took that advice to heart.”
The friends traded Go Ahead Eagles for Sparta in 2016. The defender, who was also captain, played 215 games for the Rotterdam club.
