A former attorney for former US President Donald Trump has admitted that the conspiracy theory she taught about widespread fraud involving voting machines during the US presidential election was not based on facts.
Attorney Sydney Powell asked the judge on Monday to dismiss the lawsuit against her by Dominion Voting Systems.
Weeks after the election, Powell cried without evidence that the voting computers supplier for several US states was part of an advance plan to “steal” Trump’s election.
Attorney represented Trump in a series of missing lawsuits filed to challenge the election results.
“No sane person will conclude that statements are in fact based on facts,” says the court document presented by Powell. She said the accusations against Dominion are part of the language used in the political arena. Often this is ‘offensive and inaccurate’. “Rational people understand that,” she says.
Dominion may sue Trump himself
Dominion sued Powell in January for defamation. The manufacturer is claiming compensation of at least $ 1.3 billion ($ 1.1 billion transferred) from the woman.
Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and Mike Lindell, CEO of pillow maker MyPillow and a supporter of Trump, were also brought to court by Dominion for fraud. The company does not rule out that it will also sue Trump himself.
